Competition rules and regulations



To offer a rare opportunity to photograph the world leading STFC facilities and world changing science and technology they host to provide STFC with a fresh portfolio of stunning images to raise awareness of the exciting science and technology undertaken in the United Kingdom and Internationally through partnerships and membership of International bodies.


Entry to the competition is FREE. All eligible entrants must be over 18, be an individual and abide by the terms and conditions.

The photo walk is open to amateur and professional photographers. If STFC staff wish to enter they must register in advance, be governed by the rules and terms and conditions and follow the same programme as all other entrants.


Entrants may take as many images as they wish.

All photographs entered into the competition must have been taken during the officially organised Photowalk event ONLY.

Entrants can submit up to five photographs.

Images may be taken in any format but entries must be entered in 96 dpi JPEG format and saved at quality setting 10, Adobe RGB 98. File size should be between 5Mb - 10Mb.

Single images may be digitally enhanced to remove spots or scratches, improve sharpening, for colour correction and brightness and contrast adjustment but not manipulated. The STFC judging panel reserve the right to exclude any image they believe may have been excessively treated so as to alter its authenticity

Images should be submitted in JPEG format. File names should comprise the site initials and entrant Pin number e.g. RAL_01_101656.jpg, UKATC_05_589421.jpg.

Judges will be looking for novel interpretations of eye catching images depicting the cutting edge science and technology STFC undertakes.

  • Stage 1: Internal panels from each site will put forward their shortlist of 10 photographs from their specific site including a regional winner for each site (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Daresbury Laboratory, the UK Astronomy Technology Centre and the Chilbolton Observatory)
  • Stage 2: The 40 photographs will then be uploaded to the RPS website for judging by professional scientists, our community, STFC staff and the general public for 21 days to identify an online winner.
  • Stage 3: The 40 photographs will then be judged by an expert panel who will select a national winner.

Online voting will take place from 00:00:01 on Friday 19 September 2014 and will close at 23:59:59 on Friday 10 October 2014.

National judging will take place on Tuesday 14 October 2014.

Winning photographers will be notified on Wednesday 15 October 2014 and an announcement will be made shortly thereafter.


All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrants must be the sole owner of copyright in all photographs entered and must have obtained permission of any people featured in the entries or their parents/guardians if children under 16 are featured. Further, entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.

Entrants will retain copyright in the photographs that they submit. By entering the competition all entrants grant to the STFC the non-commercial and non exclusive right to publish and exhibit their photographs within any media in relation to the promotion of STFC normal business. No fees will be payable for any of the above uses. Entrants whose photographs are one of the finalists also agree to take part in any post-competition publicity. While we make every effort to credit photographers, including in printed reproductions of their work, we cannot guarantee that every use of the photographs will include the photographers' names.


Entrants may NOT include their own or any other name in the image (i.e. in the frame or in the picture itself) which would not otherwise be in the Image. Any image that includes such a name will not be eligible for the competition.

The organisers' decision on any matters arising from these rules, terms and conditions shall be final.

The STFC will only ever use personal details for the purposes of administering the competition.

Entrants are responsible for any travel and accommodation costs.

STFC reserve the right to exclude entrants and withhold prizes for violating any of the terms and conditions listed above.

Should the quality of entries fall below the standard required we reserve the right not to award prizes.

STFC reserve the right not to provide feedback on any entry

STFC is not responsible for the failure of receipt, loss or damage of any photographs entered into the competition.

Entrants indemnify STFC against any damage and loss as a result of the competition.

These rules are governed by the laws of England and Wales. This competition is administered by the STFC.
